Shells and natural materials make great jewellery pieces

As well as using crystals, fossils, seaglass and gemstones in my pieces, I often use shells and natural materials. I am currently drying out some forget me nots to put into resin molds. The beautiful pieces in this photo were made from shells my friends brought back from a holiday in Costa Rica. I was given the task of making thirteen different necklaces from these beautiful spiral shells.

My first task was to dry out the shells that were filled with wet sand. Once they had dried out, I had to tap and twist each little spiral shell several times to get the sand out. I swear I had enough sand from the batch of shells to make a tiny sandpit!!

Next I had to drill a hole in the shell to be able to lock the silver or copper wire on to the shell before I started my design. I took into account the various personalities when designing the shell necklaces. Some were very simple and others had extra bling but each one different. I used the silver wire to create flowers, spirals and added crystals to some.

I really enjoyed this project, it was something a little different which always gives me a buzz. I was thrilled to be present when the gifts were handed out. Jewellery really is a beautiful craft to work in and brings so much pleasure to the recipient when gifted.
